LANSING – State Representative Shanelle Jackson (D-Detroit) today was named Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Michigan History, Arts and Libraries (HAL).
"I am excited to take on my new role on the in the Legislature and honored to serve my second term as the youngest woman of color to serve in the Legislature," said Jackson, who recently introduced a plan to create an arts district in Detroit. "The arts play an important role in the history of Detroit and the entire state of Michigan, and they should be celebrated. I look forward to working to preserve our history, increase awareness of art and culture in Michigan, and ensure our libraries remain places where young minds can grow."
In addition to serving as Chair of the HAL Subcommittee, Jackson was named Vice Chair of the Community Health Appropriations Subcommittee and will serve as a member of the General Government and Transportation Appropriations Subcommittees. She also was chosen to continue her services as Associate Speaker Pro Tempore, making her the first Detroit Legislator in 14 years to hold the position.
Jackson also was recently appointed Executive Vice Chair of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus (MLBC), as well as Vice Chair of the Detroit Caucus.
"It has always been my top priority to provide a strong voice for the residents of Detroit," said Jackson, who is serving her second term on the House Appropriations Committee. "I am honored that my fellow legislators have placed the same confidence in me as my constituents have by allowing me to serve as their voice at the Capitol. I'm eager to continue the important work we started in my first term and work with my colleagues to build a better, stronger Michigan."
